Participating churches are generally nearby to the northeastern area of Cleveland and its suburbs. An annual invitational softball tournament draws church teams from throughout northeastern Ohio.
The three sport league season begins in January with basketball, continues in May with the start of the softball season, and concludes with the volleyball season that begins in late September. Churches may participate in one, two, or all three sports earning points towards the 'all sports' title. Between the softball and volleyball seasons, the ECL hosts its softball tournament open to church teams from within or outside of the ECL. Volleyball is the most "co-ed" of the three sports, while softball and basketball are predominantly men's leagues, a few women play softball and the minimum age for the sports is normally around 16. Some players have played for many years. Combining all three sports leagues, more than 20 churches regularly participate in at least one sport. The softball tournament has drawn well over 100 different churches over a wider area of northeastern Ohio.
Each sport has an organizational meeting usually held at one of the participating churches a couple of weeks before the season begins. The basketball meeting is in December, softball in April, and volleyball in September. Returning teams have priority. New teams may express interest in joining and be added to the waiting list at any time. If there are openings in a sport, new teams get voted in at the organizational meetings.
